Wholly Buckets, Batman... look at this!
I have been using buckets upright and finally came up with a creative variation!
Cut the buckets (with lid intact) vertically into two clamshells sections and use as little igloos, greenhouses, hotcaps or high (high?) tunnels and keep those seedlings warm and out of the draft for a earlier spring start!!

Harvesting, sifting compost and blending with worm castings for potting soil
This blend is roughly 30% each compost, coir (shredded coconut husks) and Worm castings. Then add about 10% sand.
Drains REALLY well. the coir holds moisture. Castings give HUGE nitrition and microbe boost...
I use this in starting seeds,. cuttings, containers and right in the garden when setting seedlings and bulbs.

Are containers buckets?
These aren't exactally buckets, but the concept is the same. Keep in mind. If the botton tray doesn't have a water then things are going to get dry. These are available at Walmart and garden centers for about $8.00. During the summer I move mine outside and take off the water tray. They do well directly on the ground and the plant roots can grow deeper and get nutrition and water from the soil below.

Garlic gardens in bucket containers!
Here's a way to do garlic and not fight with weeds! Creating container for garlic garden from drywall paste buckets. The "lava rock" is actually pumice which absorts lots of water and then returns toe water to the soil as the container may dry out. Add a layer of these chunks, add potting soil and let stand in a tray of water while the pumice soaks up water. 6 garlic cloves 4" deep around the perimeter of the bucker.
Holes in the bottom allow the roots to continue to grow into the ground and water to wick up from there also. Holes in sides of bucket add oxygen to the soil to keep it fresh. Worms love to live in these buckets and you can bury food scraps between the bulbs all summer to feed the worms, resulting in more nutritious castings for your plants. More ideas at www.WhollyBuckets.co m . our store is www.CompostCritter.c om .
This is late in the year for starting garlic, but I'm putting them in the greenhouse for an extended season. Check our store at www.CompostCritter.com
Planter Bird Feeder Combination!!!
This is our first published creation! On the slide show you will see an addition of an outer bucket which holds water and makes this a self watering planter. The center post is the fill tube and an overflow hole just above the bottom of the upper bucket keeps the sump from filling too deep. Plans will be available soon.
Happy Gardening!
